As part of its think-tank and spatial development agenda, PAL has been coordinating a Master’s level Studio program together with the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Middle East Technical University, in Ankara Turkey.

The Studio focuses on the different elements of industrial urbanism, with a focus on the transformation and regeneration of industrial areas from a spatial and interdisciplinary standpoint. Bringing together architects, urban planners, urban designers and economists, the studio work has thus far focused on three leading industrial zones in Turkey. The first studio focused on two of Ankara’s first industrial zones, namely the Baskent OIZ and OSTIM, which in total host 100 thousand employees. The case study for the second semester focused on Manisa Industrial Park, one of Turkey’s leading OIZs, with exports over USD 5 billion. The third studio focused on the regeneration potential of the Izmir Alsancak Port District, through bringing in innovative and entrepreneurial elements to the hinterland of one of the largest ports in Turkey.
